Event Cueing, Event Clusters, and the Temporal Distribution of Autobiographical Memories

چکیده
This article provides an overview of a series of event-cueing experiments conducted to investigate how autobiographical memory is organized at the event level. In these experiments, participants ®rst generate a set of personal events (cueing events) and then respond to each by retrieving a second event memory (the cued event). Subsequently, relations between cued and cueing events are coded, and all events are dated and rated for importance. This approach has produced two general ®ndings. First, we have found that event memories are often embedded in narrative-like event clusters. Second, across experiments, we have observed large, systematic dierences in the temporal distribution of the event pairs. In this article, we review evidence concerning the organizational importance of event clusters. We then examine the temporal distributions obtained from three representative experiments and account for the marked dierences in these distributions by considering how task demands, memory structures, and response strategies aect retrieval from autobiographical memory. # 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Indirect cueing elicits distinct types of autobiographical event representations
Studies that distinguish among believed memories, believed-not-remembered events (e.g., family stories), and nonbelieved memories (i.e., memories no longer believed to have occurred) typically rely on experimenter provided or overtly elicited events. These methods may mis-estimate the frequency and nature of such events in everyday memory. Three studies examined whether such events would be eli...
متن کاملChronologically organized structure in autobiographical memory search
Each of us has a rich set of autobiographical memories that provides us with a coherent story of our lives. These memories are known to be highly structured both thematically and temporally. However, it is not known how we naturally tend to explore the mental timeline of our memories. Here we developed a novel cued retrieval paradigm in order to investigate the temporal element of memory search...
متن کاملO14: Autobiographical Memory, Trauma, and the Development of Memory Interventions
Autobiographical memory, that is, our memory for personal life experiences, is integral to our sense of self. However, the experience of trauma can create distortions in how our memories are bought to mind. In particular, trauma can produce an overgeneral memory style, which relates to the development of both PTSD and depression. However, theory states that immediately following a traumatic eve...
متن کاملInvoluntary and Voluntary Memory Sequencing Phenomena An Interesting Puzzle for the Study of Autobiographical Memory Organization and Retrieval
One of the most enduring questions about long-term memory is how such a vast quantity of information is organized for efficient and reliable retrieval. Within semantic memory, the clustering of items in category generation tasks informs our understanding of organization. Bousefield (1953) defined a cluster as “a sequence of associates having an essential relationship between its members . . . [...
متن کاملSpecific and general autobiographical knowledge in adults with autism spectrum disorders: the role of personal goals.
Autobiographical knowledge is stored hierarchically, at both specific and general levels of representation. It has also been proposed that the self is the structure around which autobiographical memories are organised. The current series of studies assessed whether the autobiographical memory difficulties observed in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) could be due to problems in using ...
